Mujeres en el Poder en I&M

25 de marzo de 2025

I&M is proud of the trailblazing and innovative women who work to maintain reliable power for customers while also bettering our communities.

Kelly Ferneau

Kelly Ferneau is D.C. Cook Nuclear Plant's first female executive vice president and Chief Nuclear Officer. She's been with I&M for 11 years and has consistently climbed the leadership ladder. Starting as Operations Manager at Cook Plant, she recently was named the first female plant manager and now serves as the Chief Nuclear Officer.

"In the early days of my career, I just wanted to do a good job and blend in - not be pointed out for being a female," Ferneau said. "As I have continued my career, I have found that it is important to not shy away from what makes you unique. I feel honored to be the first female in these roles and know it is important to be seen by other people in these roles so they can more easily see what is possible for them."

Ferneau became interested in working in the utility industry through her parents. She also shared a "full circle" career moment that eventually resulted in her leading the Cook Nuclear Plant.

"I went to a weeklong program in high school at Trine University and the program was to get women interested in engineering," Ferneau said. "One of the places we visited during that week was the D.C. Cook Nuclear Plant."

Joni Kotterman always wanted to work outdoors in nature and make a positive impact on the environment. That's why her work as a Utility Forester is a perfect fit.

"I supervise the forestry contract crews performing the vegetation management in Muncie's district," Kotterman said. "I am out with the crews, ensuring they have work plans, equipment and staffing needed to safely complete quality vegetation management."

At I&M, we are highly focused on serving our customers safely. Kotterman says an important part of her job is talking with customers.

"I have had innumerable conversations with customers about powerline safety and informed them of potentially dangerous situations their trees might be actively causing," Kotterman said. "Having these conversations with customers involves them in our goal of keeping powerlines, those working the lines and the public safe."

Economic and Business Development Manager Jill Scicchitano is also highly connected with our customers and communities. She's dedicated to strengthening communities and supporting initiatives that drive economic growth - specifically critical infrastructure development, workforce enhancement and job creation.

"There is a significant connection between economic development, our business and our customers. While electric utilities are often overlooked in discussions about economic growth, they play a significant role in creating strong, competitive communities," Scicchitano said. "Economic development includes not only businesses but also the people within those communities. As the economy grows, jobs are created and local investments rise, contributing to a more vibrant community."

Through each of their I&M careers, they have learned valuable life and work skills. So, what's their top piece of advice?

"Your network is just as important as your skills. While hard work is essential, relationships open doors in ways that skills alone cannot," Scicchitano said. "Building meaningful genuine connections, seeking mentors, and working to maintain relationships over time can lead to unexpected opportunities."

"Find a community of like-minded people who inspire you to do better every day and motivate you to achieve," said Kotterman. "It's those people right next to you who influence and impact your life."

"Don't take a back seat - sit at the table and speak up," Ferneau said. "You do not need to wait to be 100% certain of something before you speak. Your voice and opinion matter."

American Electric Power was named first in the utility industry on Forbes magazine’s America’s Best Employers for Women 2024 list. This is the fifth year in a row AEP was named to the list. For more information on a career at I&M or AEP, haga clic aquí.
