Year-round, I&M works on power improvement projects, along with trimming trees away from power lines, to ensure reliable service. We also respond to power outages caused by severe weather. Due to this, lineworkers, network mechanics, meter technicians, forestry professionals, customer design technicians, customer service representatives and our contractors often work along major highways, state roads, county roads, downtown streets, neighborhood streets and alleyways. Please be aware of crews especially in marked work zones.
I&M vehicles have reflective materials and flashing lights to alert drivers. I&M work zones are also marked on roads with orange cones and signs, and we often partner with local traffic control companies to direct drivers.
"You can expect to see an increase of I&M employees responding to storm repairs and working on power grid improvements projects for our customers and communities," said Cody Zacur, I&M's Manger of Safety and Health. "We have a strong safety program at I&M to protect our workers, but we need drivers to remain focused to avoid accidents in work zones. We want to send everyone home safely to their families and you can help us do that by remaining vigilant behind the wheel."
Even with added protections, work zones are dangerous for our workers and drivers. Please help keep everyone safe with the below reminders:
- Be alert when you approach a work zone. Pay attention to flaggers, warning signs and speed limits when entering and exiting the designated work zone.
- Avoid distractions while driving. Please refrain from talking or texting on the phone, changing radio stations or eating while passing through a work zone.
- Stay focused on the road. Keep your eyes on the road ahead and not on the work being done.
- Expect the unexpected. Work zones are full of commotion, please keep an eye out for people and moving equipment.
- Don’t approach crews. If you see crews working, please do not try to talk to them about the work they are doing or about a power outage. Crews often work with hazardous equipment and electric currents which could cause serious or fatal injuries.
I&M employees and contractors work as quickly and as safely as possible. When you drive through a work zone, remember I&M crews are doing their job to help you and your community have safe and reliable power.
