Enhancing Reliability Through Planned Projects

1 de julio de 2025

You get a call from Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) about an upcoming "service interruption scheduled for your area." To ensure customers have reliable power, temporary outages allow our crews to safely complete projects to enhance service.

As reliability projects begin, so do communication efforts for customers. Power loss can be inconvenient and frustrating. To ensure impacted customers are prepared, recorded messages are sent to those who will temporarily loose service. Planned outage alerts are only provided through a phone call, coming days before an outage is scheduled. Not receiving the heads up? Ensure all information listed on your I&M account is up to date to get these updates and others in the future.

Planned outages are primarily set up for maintenance, vegetation removal or projects to improve reliability. This gives crews space to safely make repairs or upgrades to technology and equipment. Outages can last anywhere from under an hour to five hours - but every project is different, and the outage duration is communicated in the phone message to customers. A planned outage could also be for an emergent situation, which gives less advanced warning.

Once you receive your phone message, you will know the date and time of the outage and how long it will last. Normally, these outages are planned for weekdays and might happen when your house is empty for the day. Whether home or not, consider preparing for a temporary outage by:

  • Charging phones or other electronics beforehand.
  • Leaving the refrigerator and freezer closed during the outage.
  • Unplugging sensitive electronics, like computers, printers of other devices.
  • Making sure you have freshwater available for family and pets, if outage lasts a couple of hours.

If you or a family member receive this phone call and have questions about this service interruption, please call I&M's Customer Service Operations Center at 1-800-311-4634. Customer Service Specialists are also available on our Indiana Michigan Power Facebook y X  de AEP Ohio.
