Comience el año escolar ahorrando energía

28 de julio de 2025

It likely feels like yesterday you put away that backpack at the end of another school year. Now, summer days are quickly giving way to school supplies and classroom assignments. As you prepare for a new routine, consider adding energy-saving practices to help with the year - many taking little effort and can result in savings overtime.

As kids return to their classrooms, many will see the return of homework and other activities. Help your student this school year, and ace your energy-efficiency goals, with these simple tips:

  • Reading: Whether sucked into a good book, or cramming for an upcoming test, ensure your lights have LED bulbs, which use 90% less energy than typical incandescent bulbs.
  • Math: Today, most homework assignments are done on a tablet or other device. Once completed, give the device a rest and power down to avoid added energy consumption.
  • Writing: For those longer assignments, when charging a device is needed, consider plugging it into a smart power strip. These power strips will cut power flow to eliminate energy waste from devices not actively in use. A full list of smart power strips, as well as TVs, appliances and other items are available on the Marketplace website.
  • Lunch: Consider energy-saving practices while packing tomorrow’s meal, like closing the refrigerator door after you grab what you need. Every time it is opened, up to 30% of cooled air can escape.
  • Recess: As you rush to spend time outside, make sure the door behind you is shut all the way. This helps keep warm air from entering your home in the last part of summer, possibly forcing an air conditioner to work harder to maintain the desired temperature.

Each home's routine is different, just like each homeowner's energy use is different. By completing a home energy profile, you can personalize your home and habits to access additional, custom saving tips. These energy efficiency tips will fit into areas of your home to help lower energy use and prompt potential savings on your monthly bill throughout the year.
