I&M Fortalece la Red Eléctrica Local Antes de la Temporada de Tormentas Severas

11 de marzo de 2026

We've already seen severe weather across Indiana and Michigan. To ensure our customers have power when they need it most, I&M has focused on ensuring reliability.

As a result of proactive year-round work, I&M is improving and upgrading our system to withstand severe weather and provide real-time data if outages happen. Some of our work includes:

  • Reducing Tree-related Outages: With our proactive and data-driven approach, tree-related outages have dropped nearly 20% in four years. Last year, I&M inspected and trimmed limbs and branches away from approximately 3,400 miles of powerlines.
  • Reducing Outage Times: In 2025, self-healing technology helped save more than 3-million outage minutes for I&M customers by automatically detecting and quickly restoring power.
  • Reducing Future Outages: I&M crews installed more than 18,000 new power poles and 268 miles of power lines in 2025, targeting outage-prone areas. The upgraded equipment helps the system better withstand severe weather.

Our investments are benefiting customers. In the last five years, I&M has reduced customer outages by 50%, and when an outage occurs, restoration is 55% faster.

Preparing for Storm Season

I&M prepares for inclement weather throughout the year, and we encourage our customers to do the same. Use these easy tips to stay safe and connected in the event of severe weather:

  • Make an Emergency Kit: Have a bag with emergency items, including nonperishable food, water, flashlight, fresh batteries, battery-powered radio or television, portable cell phone charging bank, blanket or sleeping bag, first aid kit and any necessary medications.
  • Stay Away from Downed Lines: All downed lines should be considered energized – and extremely dangerous. The power line and anything it could touch, including fences, debris or standing water, can carry electric currents which could cause serious or fatal injuries. If you see a fallen wire, keep yourself and others, including pets, away and call your local 911 or I&M at 1-800-311-4634.
  • Outage Alerts: Now is the time to update your Cuenta de I&M to stay connected if severe weather is forecasted. Make sure your email address and phone number are up to date. You can also download our app or sign up to receive personalized text and email alerts sent right to your phone.

I&M has a strong and experienced storm restoration team of line workers, damage assessors, tree trimming experts and support staff ready to respond when severe weather strikes. I&M and AEP are part of a nationwide network of power companies that help each other during widespread power outages.
