Putting our customers first is our mission and the motivation that spurred on I&M's storm restoration team as severe storms caused outages across parts of our service area. Thanks to the team's focus and safe work, most of the affected customers had power restored within 24 hours after the series of storms.
On Monday April 27, approximately 20,000 customers lost service after strong winds, up to 71 miles per hour, and heavy rain moved through the Muncie, South Bend and southwest Michigan service areas. I&M's 1,300-member storm restoration team included internal employees, contractors and additional crews from Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois and West Virginia.
Working through soggy conditions, including heavily saturated ground, the storm restoration team worked continuously to restore power, replacing 67 broken or damaged poles and restringing 337 individual spans of downed wires.
"I'm extremely proud of how safely and efficiently our team restored power to the majority of customers in under 24 hours," said Jennifer Ellis, vice president of Distribution Region Operations. "We're grateful to every household and business affected for their patience."
I&M appreciates our customers who shared kind messages like the ones listed below on social media:

I&M was able to execute a rapid restoration process because of our proactive work on blue sky days to improve and upgrade our system. Those activities include:
- Reducing Tree-related Outages: With our proactive and data-driven approach, tree-related outages have dropped nearly 25% in four years.
- Reducing Outage Times: In 2025, self-healing technology helped save more than 3-million outage minutes for I&M customers by automatically detecting and quickly restoring power.
- Reducing Future Outages: I&M crews installed more than 18,000 new power poles and 268 miles of power lines in 2025, targeting outage-prone areas to help the system better withstand severe weather.
Our investments are benefiting customers. In the last five years, I&M has reduced customer outages by 50%, and when an outage occurs, restoration time is 55% faster.
