Con un hermoso día de finales de primavera, grupos de corredores emprendieron su recorrido de más de 3 millas. This race, filled with predominantly elementary-aged girls running, embarked on the celebratory 5k race, coming at the conclusion of a season of training. For the organization making this opportunity possible, Girls on the Run strives for the crossing of the finish line to be just the beginning for these girls.  

The middle of May marked the celebratory race for both the Girls on the Run Michiana and Northeast Indiana groups. With much planning and execution, it takes a host of dedicated help to make this opportunity happen. From the coaches getting the girls ready to run a race, to volunteer "sparkle runners" offering encouragement, all come together so these girls can experience confidence and excitement for their accomplishment.

Aside from sponsorship opportunities, I&M staff also made an impact on the girls running in South Bend, Elkhart and Fort Wayne.

"Participating as a sparkle runner offers the incredible opportunity to run alongside these girls who radiate excitement and confidence as they see their hard work paying off," said Mona Livingston, I&M External Affairs manager. "Seeing the community rallying behind them as they go is a great experience."

Girls on the run is a nonprofit organization designed to enhance participants' social, emotional and physical skills to successfully navigate life experiences. Through fun, interactive lessons, they seek to meet the unique needs of all participants of any ability and background.

"Through the support we provide to this organization, we are helping build up a significant force for the future in these girls," said Heather Riggle, I&M Energy Efficiency manager. "For them to have these experiences at such a young age, it sets them up to do whatever they set their heart to later in life."
