Keeping Your Home Comfortable and Efficient This Winter

12 de Diciembre de 2024

The winter chill is here, making indoors the ideal place to be as temperatures fall. Poorly sealed windows and wintery draft make your home feel not as comfortable and can push a heating system to work harder. This winter, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) can help keep out the cold and potentially save energy, and money, on a monthly bill.

In the winter, 25% of energy used to heat homes can escape through improper sealing. These air leaks might not be easily detected but can make a big difference when it comes to your home's energy bills.

I&M customers can complete an Revisión de Energía en Línea to identify additional energy-saving opportunities in their home. This fast, easy option can show where your home uses energy and provide energy-saving tips. And small changes can add up. For immediate savings, I&M will send homeowners a free kit of energy-saving products upon survey competition. Kits are limited to one per I&M account every three years.

A free Revisión de Energía en el Hogar can also identify opportunities to save for income-qualified customers. During this checkup, homeowners will walk through their home with an I&M energy expert to identify any existing concerns or issues. Upon completion of the checkup, homeowners can receive a free kit with energy-saving products, which are installed during the appointment. To qualify for a free checkup:

  • Homeowner must be an I&M residential customer living in or renting a single family or duplex home.
  • Home must utilize electric heat.
  • Must meet household income levels of 200% (Indiana) or 250% (Michigan) of federal poverty levels.

For additional information and to schedule a Home Energy Checkup, visit our sitio or call (833) 566-0583. Checkups are limited to one every three years, per address.

Consejos para Ahorrar Energía

Did you know monthly furnace filter cleanings can remove dust and dirt that make a furnace run harder and potentially break down? Basic energy-saving practices can help ensure savings on a monthly bill, especially when it comes to preparing your home for winter, including:

  • Pick the right kind of caulk for the job. Latex or acrylic caulk is great for indoors – it is easy to clean and can be more forgiving for beginners.
  • Don’t forget to weatherproof attic access. Install batt insulation to the back of the door and use weather stripping to seal the opening.
  • Seal edges of unused doors or windows with rope caulk. Don’t permanently seal shut, as you may need quick ventilation or escape in an emergency.
