As community needs heighten during colder months, the work done by the Muncie Mission becomes critical - even lifesaving. But keeping up with demand following the holidays can be challenging across its various services, including emergency men's shelter, family services and shelter for women and children.
Through the American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation and Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), the Mission recently received a new resource to make serving the community easier. The addition of a new panel delivery van came just before the holidays and will fit in with the previous two commercial box trucks previously donated by the AEP Foundation in 2020 and 2023. Each vehicle in the fleet supports an area of the Mission's work, with the newest to aid in efforts to rescue food donations from local restaurants, food producers and distribution centers.
"This gift is truly a blessing, especially during this busier season," said Bob Scott, vice president of development at the Muncie Mission. "We've already used the van to pick up donations from canned food drives, winter clothing collections and Christmas gifts for our guests from our church friends and local businesses."
In addition to its nightly emergency men's shelter, the Muncie Mission also provides a free community lunch every weekday, as well as a food, clothing and hygiene pantry two days a week. These programs, in addition to many others, see increased use in the winter months, making support from all areas of the community important.
"We are honored to partner with the Muncie Mission to assist in their efforts to address a critical need within our community," said Rob Keisling, I&M's External Affairs manager. "The impact they have in the Muncie area is notable and we are excited to seeing this grow moving forward."
Further support from the AEP Foundation ensured those in need within the community also received a warm meal during the Muncie Mission's Annual Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. These events provided a full meal to around 1,000 individuals in need.
