Nutrir el alma a través del servicio a la comunidad

10 de abril de 2025

Throughout the year, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) staff complete various service projects together in the community. This recently included helping at the Fort Wayne Zoo for the United Way's Day of Caring and setting up holiday displays for Meridian Health - to name a couple. In addition to these activities, several members of our team also serve the community independently. Despite the type of role or how it is completed, one thing is evident: we love the communities we call home.

And for Mona Livingston, Customer Services manager at I&M, dedicating her time to the community has always been a family endeavor – one that she has kept up for years.

What organizations do you volunteer with and what are your roles within those opportunities?

I serve as a board member for the Potawatomi Zoo in South Bend, where I am an active member of the strategic and governance committees. I also serve on the Board of Directors for the Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber. I am grateful to also volunteer with Girls on the Run, where I encourage girls running the 5k as a member of the Cheer Squad, as well as the Elkhart Career Center, with the opportunity to assist with readiness programs for students preparing for the workforce. Other organizations include the Elkhart County Humane Society and various United Way (southwest Michigan and Elkhart) events such as Rake a Difference, Cardboard Boat Race, Pack a Backpack and Kindergarten Readiness Programs.

How long have you been involved in volunteer work?

I have been involved in volunteer work my entire life, starting at age five with my family. Volunteering has always been a family affair. My father, who is now 90, dedicates about five hours a day to community service.

What drives you to volunteer your time for the community?

Volunteering is my way of contributing to society. It helps me to comprehend the challenges our communities face, which enables me to be a better neighbor, employee and individual.

In your opinion, why should someone who doesn’t volunteer, sign up to do it?

I believe that volunteering nurtures the soul. I encourage others to find a cause they are passionate about and join in - it can make a significant difference. It is an opportunity to be part of something larger than oneself!
