At Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), we believe in the power of a team. In the work we do to deliver reliable power to customers, we also ensure that we are showing up to serve our communities. Within our larger team of over 2,000 employees, smaller groups unite to ensure they are fulfilling both responsibilities - and then some. 

Outside of their focus on grid sustainability, I&M’s grid modernization team is passionate about sustainability, or the growth, of their own community, achieving this by volunteering their time to neighbors in any season.

What organizations does your team volunteer with and what are your roles within those opportunities?

Our grid modernization team has been fortunate to serve the Allen County United Way through its Day of Caring initiative. Each year the project and local organization changes, so we have had an opportunity to experience something new each time we have volunteered. We also spent time during the holiday season at the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission, helping prep upcoming meals in their kitchen for those who use the Mission's services.

How long has your team been involved in volunteer work?

Our team has been volunteering over the past three years.

What drives your team to volunteer time for the community?

Volunteering is something our entire team enjoys doing. Being able to help those during a challenging time, as well as give back to our own community, is important. Additionally, volunteer opportunities allow us to not only fill a need specific in our community, but it gives us a chance to bond and build comradery.

Why should someone who doesn’t volunteer, sign up to do it?

Volunteering is a way to pay it forward or give back to others. There is no greater joy than serving others and seeing the impact that has on someone's life. Being able to do this, especially as a work team, is very special.
