Staying Energy-Efficient with a Fuller Home This Summer

16 de mayo de 2025

The start of summer brings change. Our routines look different, the days are longer and because school is out of session, your home may be more occupied. As people come and go, and the temperatures rise, how we stay comfortable and accomplish our to-do list can also change. This can use more energy to keep the air running, more lights on than usual and outdoor space ready to enjoy. To stay energy-efficient during this time, planning now can help save energy, and possibly money, on your monthly energy bill.

Whether your college student is now home, or you are hosting more summer gatherings, incorporating simple practices can help promote savings this season and throughout the year. Estos incluyen:

  • Keeping air vents open. Whether rearranging a room to fit items temporarily brought home from college or quickly throwing down a bag as you walk in the door, ensure the room’s air vent does not become covered. Keeping it open allows cold air to flow into the room, making it feel comfortable.
  • Practicing smart thermostat habits. Aim for a comfortable, yet slightly warmer temperature, such as 78 degrees, or higher, when you are home. A smart thermostat can help automatically adjust the setting, aligning with your home’s schedule.
  • Being mindful of when you use appliances. When temperatures reach extreme highs, be mindful of when and what appliances you use. Peak hours commonly occur as most people come home from work and begin their evening routines. Consider hanging laundry to dry and using smaller appliances, like an air fryer, to prepare dinner.
  • Using natural light. As the days last longer, sunshine offers natural light that can fill a room, similar to that of a lamp but no energy use required. As light disappears, transition to lights with LED bulbs, which use 90% less energy than typical incandescent bulbs. This includes lighting used outdoors as well.
