Car Crashes Impact I&M Customers and Communities

28 de mayo de 2025

Weather, such as thunderstorms and ice storms, remains the leading cause of power outages for I&M customers. A less obvious cause for outages, resulting from damage to power poles and lines, can happen in seconds - car crashes.

I&M works year-round to prevent outages and enhance reliability with installing innovative technology, upgrading equipment and trimming nearby trees and vegetation near equipment. However, if a vehicle strikes a power pole, it can also cause considerable damage resulting in an outage.

In 2024, more than 560 car crashes disrupted service to more than 70,000 customers across Indiana and Michigan. When responding to car crashes, I&M crews start with a safety focus.

"During a typical car crash where our equipment is severely damaged, I&M crews prioritize safety by de-energizing power lines before beginning repairs, ensuring the protection of victims and first responders. They collaborate closely with first responders to secure the scene before initiating the restoration process," said Scott Huebner, director of I&M's Distribution Region Operations. "This meticulous work includes removing damaged equipment, setting new poles, and stringing new power lines. Once the new equipment is installed and the system is re-energized, power is restored to customers. Although the average restoration time ranges from two to four hours, the crews remain focused on safety, recognizing that while restoring power quickly is important, maintaining a safe working environment is paramount."

Car crashes impact those involved in the accident, first responders, fellow drivers when traffic signals go out and those with medical devices. It can also disrupt service during hot and cold temperature swings. As we enter summer, more people will be on the roads, which reinforces the importance of safe driving.

"It's critical to avoid distractions while driving-such as texting, changing music or using a navigation system," said Cody Zacur, I&M's Safety and Health manager. "Additionally, it's essential to remain vigilant in work zones, especially when encountering I&M crews engaged in power restoration. Our top priority is ensuring that our employees safely return home to their loved ones each day, and maintaining focus behind the wheel is vital to achieving this goal."
