It is never a bad idea to be prepared - especially for severe weather. Ahead of projected storms, you may be warned to have an emergency kit ready - which should be fit for your home's needs. Simple steps can keep your family one step ahead if severe weather strikes.
Whether you have an emergency kit already put together or not, consider adding these items into the mix:
- Water
- Flashlights with extra batteries
- Botiquín de primeros auxilios
- Battery-powered radio
- Nonperishable food items
- Hygiene items
- Portable chargers
- Blankets or towels
- Medications or other necessary medical items
- Copies of important documents
- Infant needs, including diapers, bottles or formula
- Pet supplies, including food, water or leash
The items you include should fit the needs of those in your home. Consider the items your home uses every day and how those fit into your kit. For example, families with young children may add small toys or books, while others may require critical special need items.
To make the most of your emergency kit, and have it in proper order if severe weather hits, consider:
- Storing your kit in an easy to reach area or in your home’s storm shelter
- Regularly checking for expired items or items to replenish
- Ensure everyone knows how to use the kit’s items and understands your home’s storm plan
You may consider having multiple emergency kits in your home or even add one to your car. If making a car kit, plan to adjust it each season with essentials for those conditions. This might include adding an ice scraper, small shovel and heavy clothing to the kit during the winter.
