Safety is top priority for I&M and that’s why we encourage customers to safely use portable generators.
“Before you plug a generator in, please know there are considerable risks for your home, your family and our restoration workers,” said Cody Zacur, I&M’s Safety and
Health manager. "Some people may have not used a generator in a while, or ever, and may dismiss serious hazards. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for how to safely use and maintain a generator.
If you find yourself needing to use a generator, here are four tips for safe operation.
Outdoor use only. Don’t use gas-powered generators in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces, like inside your garage or basement. Place the generator outside and away from doors, windows and vents to prevent carbon monoxide from entering the home.
Plug in Safely. When using a portable generator plug the appliance, tool or motor directly into the proper electrical outlet on the generator. Nunca enchufe el generador en un tomacorriente de pared. No conecte la salida eléctrica del generador a ningún circuito eléctrico de la casa o del edificio. Plugging a generator into an electrical panel may cause backfeeding and harm I&M employees, fellow first responders and your household.
Operate in a dry space. Never use a generator in a wet area or in the rain as this can cause shock or electrocution. Do not use any electrical equipment if it’s submerged in water.
Properly Refuel. Generators can become hot while in use and for long periods after they are stopped. Fuels like gasoline and kerosene can ignite if spilled on a hot generator. Before refueling, turn the generator off and allow time for it to cool.
