¿Cómo Ayudar Durante el Calor Extremo?

11 de julio de 2024

Summer weather can be a bit unpredictable - especially when it comes to heat. Is it humid or just plain hot? Somehow it all feels the same when heat index numbers soar into triple digits. Despite this extreme weather, simple, voluntary actions from customers can make a difference in the long run.

Throughout the year, energy demand changes within our footprint, as well as nationwide. There are several factors that influence energy demand, but a large contributor is weather. What makes summer unique is cooling for your home is dependent on electricity. Which may add up when we see extreme temperature hikes, such as those in June.

Demand Response is when there is a need to balance the demand on the power grid by encouraging customers to reduce or shift energy usage out of peak times. In response, I&M may issue an alert for a "Peak Energy Event" to customers who have voluntarily chosen to participate in one of our Power Reward programs. Typically, these peak times occur around the 4-6 p.m. timeframe, as individuals start returning home after work and school. Customers who do opt into this program will be asked to reduce their energy use during this designated time.

Taking such actions are not mandatory or required for customers, but they may include:

  • Set your air condition thermostat to as high a temperature that you are comfortable at. Utilize counterclockwise ceiling fans for additional air flow and ensure all air vents are free of furniture or other obstructions.
  • Consider adjusting what time you run your washer and dryer. Running that load after the peak hours or early in the morning could make an impact. If it is critical to do laundry, consider hanging clean clothes to dry as opposed to running your dryer.
  • When it comes to dinner prep during extreme heat, opt for appliances that use minimal energy such as a slow cooker or microwave. Save using the oven for another night or after peak hours.
  • Dishes leftover after dinner? Load your dishwasher but hold off on starting it until it is totally full. Delay its start until later in the night, possibly before bed.
  • A tip for any season, unplug or turnoff appliances when not in use to save additional energy.

With the Power Rewards programs, I&M customers can earn bill credits when they voluntarily sign up to participate and shift their energy use outside peak hours. Participation in these programs can help keep prices more affordable for homeowners and other I&M customers. By visiting the Power Rewards website, take the quiz to select the program that matches your home and unique needs - all at no cost. Additionally, homeowners have the choice of how much and how long to participate in each peak event.
