Volunteers from our Michigan service centers helped neighbors in Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties clear leaves as part of The United Way of Southwest Michigan's Rake a Difference event. This annual event for seniors or those physically unable to rake or pay for similar services helps to lower the risk for falls or serious injury if these individuals were to attempt the work on their own. And it is done at no cost for these individuals.
"We are frequently doing work in the community to ensure our customers have reliable power at home, but to take a day to serve neighbors in a different way, is always very special," said Mona Livingston, I&M Business Operations Support Manager. "We hope those we helped today understand how supported they are not just by our team, but by their entire community."
Despite rainy conditions, volunteers spent the day removing leaves from yards and clearing accumulated debris. These important steps for winter preparation can protect homes and lawns from damage when snow melts in the spring. It also ensures safety by eliminating trip hazards from downed limbs or branches covered with leaves.
The 14th annual Rake a Difference served over 330 seniors around the three county community, with 134 total teams involved in the event. That accounted for 1,319 volunteers who dedicated their time and talents to neighbors in need.
