What’s on a Power Pole?

5 de mayo de 2025

Power poles and power lines are often referred to as distribution lines. I&M maintains and operates more than 20,000 miles of distribution poles and power lines that safely deliver electricity to homes and businesses across our more than 4,500 square mile service area.

Have you ever wondered what the lines and equipment are on a power pole? We have the answers for you.

Most power poles are made of wood and are used to support overhead power lines and various equipment. Power lines and communication cables are placed high on the pole to keep them out of the way for vehicles and people.

Here are common pieces of equipment that can be seen on a distribution power pole:

  • An Insulator aims to prevent energized wires from coming in contact with each other or the power pole.
  • A Primary Wire is on top of the pole and usually carries 12,000 volts of electricity from a substation.
  • A Crossarm holds the wires up on a pole.
  • A Cutout acts like a fuse and opens when there is a problem with the power line or a section of the line to prevent further damage.
  • A Lightning Arrestor protects the pole and equipment from lightning strikes.
  • A Transformer converts high voltage electricity carried by primary wires and lowers the voltage for use by customers.
  • A Neutral Wire is found below the transformer and acts as a line back to a substation, balancing out the amount of electricity on the system.
  • Secondary wires carry the lower voltage electricity after it passes through the transformer.
  • Telephone and cable wires are typically the lowest wires on a power pole.
  • Guy wires help stabilize the power pole.
  • Ground wires run the length of the pole and directs any electricity on the pole safely into the earth.

Electricity is an important part of our daily lives, but it is extremely dangerous. Please follow the below safety tips:

  • If you see a downed power line, stay away from anything it could be touching – including fences or standing water – and call your local police department or I&M at 1-800-311-4634.
  •  Si tiene un problema de energía relacionado con la seguridad, árbolesalumbrado públicoiluminación alquilada o robo, let us know below and we'll do our best to fix it. You can report any hazard to I&M at 1-800-311-4634 or on our website at the links above.
  • Please do not participate in recreational activities – like flying a kite – near a power pole.
  • Do not nail posters for garage sales, businesses or events to power poles. This can create a safety hazard for lineworkers if repairs are needed.
